In the middle of March 1915, the 6th London battalion landed in France as part of 4 Brigade, 2nd London Division. They then joined 6 Brigade, 2nd Division for trench instruction under 1st King’s Royal Rifle Corps in the trenches opposite Cuinchy and the notorious “Brickfields”. On 2nd April, 'A' Company undertook a 24 hour trench tour during which William Morris was killed. He was the battalion’s first casualty.
